Joy to the World
Daily Reading to Prepare Our Hearts for Christmas
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” -Isaiah 9:6
Christmas is a time to reflect on the magnitude of Jesus’s birth and its impact on our lives, but we live in this world and sadly, it can be so easy to get consumed by its ways.We think about buying gifts for our loved ones, decorating our homes, and attending multiple holiday events. And while these are not inherently bad, the main purpose of the holiday often gets overlooked.
Ever since I gave my life to God I have loved Christmas, but if I’m being honest, I didn’t do much to honor Jesus during this time. It wasn’t until I had kids that I began to think about how to approach this holiday in a way that points to Jesus. We transformed images of reindeer and Santa into Nativity scenes. We read books about the birth of Jesus. We have a Christmas countdown with a scripture and each day, we talk about our Savior’s birth, adding different elements to a scene depicting it
I’ll be following along with a book, “Joy to the World” which goes through daily sermons of theologian and preacher, Charles Spurgeon. It catalogs some of his Christmas preaching and highlights the significance of the Christmas story. Each passage has a focal scripture and a brief message. I will be summarizing this message and adding my thoughts to it. I pray that each day Spurgeon’s message can direct our hearts towards the true meaning of Christmas bringing us peace and joy in a season that has become synonymous with overconsumption and stress.
